Types of Analysis

Current Capabilities of SIGF

  • High-precision analyses and microanalyses of C- and O-isotopes in carbonates (Kiel IV, GasBench II)
  • O and H isotopic analyses of water via equilibration and pyrolysis (GasBench II, TC/EA)
  • Carbon isotopes in dissolved inorganic carbon (GasBench II)
  • C and N isotopic analyses of bulk organic matter and oils (EA)
  • N and O analysis of nitrates in water (GasBench II)
  • Elemental results for C, N, O, and H (EA, TC/EA)

Future Capabilities of SIGF

  • C and H isotopic analyses of specific organic compounds (e.g. gaseous hydrocarbons, lipids, lignitic compounds, etc.) (GC/C-IRMS)
  • O analysis of organic based samples such as cellulose (TC/EA)
  • O isotopic analyses of phosphates and sulfates via pyrolysis (TC/EA)
  • H analysis of keratin based samples such as feathers and hair via pyrolysis (TC/EA)
  • Inorganic S analysis (EA)
  • Analysis of water samples using a laser based cavity ringdown system

Using the Finnigan Gasbench II in combination with the PostCon cryotrapping options or the PreCon:

  • 13C/12C of CO2 in air (sub-ambient concentrations)
  • 15N/14N and 18O/16O of N2O in air (300 ppb)
  • 13C/12C of CH4 in air (1.7 ppm)
  • 15N/14N and 18O/16O of N2O
  • 15N/14N and 18O/16O of nitrate using the Sigman technique
  • 15N/14N of N2 from micro-preparation systems

Flexible design allows use with lasers and Elemental Analyzers:

  • Sampling of CO2 and SO2 from laser combustions and decarbonation
  • Post-combustion concentration of CO2, N2, SO2 from elemental analyzers
